How many Rings of Power were given to the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium?

The story behind the answer

Three Rings of Power were given to the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.

The Elven Rings are Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. They were made by Elven-smiths in Eregion, led by Celebrimbor, without Sauron’s direct involvement in their forging. Even so, they were connected to the wider Ring-making project and were vulnerable to the power of the One Ring.

Narya was associated with fire and was eventually worn by Gandalf. Nenya, the Ring of Water, was worn by Galadriel. Vilya, the greatest of the Three, was held by Elrond. Their powers were used for preservation, protection, and resistance to decay rather than ordinary conquest.

The Three should not be confused with the Seven Rings given to Dwarf-lords or the Nine Rings given to mortal Men. In the central rhyme, the numbers are three for Elves, seven for Dwarves, nine for Men, and one for the Dark Lord.
