How many regular-season points did Wayne Gretzky score in his NHL career?

The story behind the answer

Wayne Gretzky scored 2,857 regular-season points in his NHL career.

Gretzky totaled 894 goals and 1,963 assists in 1,487 regular-season games, producing 2,857 points. He played for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers between 1979 and 1999.

His point total is the NHL career record by a wide margin. Gretzky also holds the league records for career goals, assists, and points per game among players with at least 1,000 games. His 1,963 assists alone exceed the career point totals of many Hall of Fame players.

The number applies to regular-season scoring, not playoff scoring. Gretzky added 382 playoff points in 208 games, giving him 3,239 combined regular-season and playoff points in NHL competition. He is commonly called “The Great One,” and the NHL retired his number 99 league-wide in 1999.
