The original Pokédex of the Pokémon video game series contained 151 Pokémon species.
These Pokémon were introduced in Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, which formed the first generation of the series. The list runs from Bulbasaur, numbered 001, to Mew, numbered 151. The first 150 species could be encountered through normal game play, trading, or version-specific methods, while Mew was initially distributed through special events.
The number 151 is often associated with the slogan “Gotta Catch ’Em All,” although completing the original Pokédex required trading between game versions and obtaining Pokémon unavailable in a single cartridge.
Later generations expanded the Pokédex dramatically. Generation II added 100 new species, bringing the total to 251, while subsequent games introduced hundreds more. This means the original 151 should not be confused with the number of Pokémon in the modern franchise.
The original count remains a defining milestone for Pokémon’s 30-year history.
