How many points does a successful conversion add after a rugby league try?

The story behind the answer

A successful conversion adds two points after a rugby league try.

The conversion is a place kick taken after the try has been awarded. The kicker attempts to send the ball between the goalposts and above the crossbar. The kick is taken on an imaginary line running back from the spot where the ball was grounded for the try.

Because the kick is aligned with the grounding point, players often try to score close to the posts. A try under the posts gives the kicker a relatively short and central attempt, while a try near the touchline creates a much more difficult angle.

A successful try and conversion therefore produce six points: four for the try and two for the kick. This differs from a penalty goal, which is also worth two points in rugby league, while a drop goal is worth one.
