Sony had sold 5 million PlayStation VR headsets worldwide by December 31, 2019.
Sony announced the five-million-unit sales milestone in January 2020, covering sales made through the end of 2019. The result made PlayStation VR one of the most widely distributed dedicated VR headsets of its generation, helped by the large installed base of PlayStation 4 consoles.
PlayStation VR launched in October 2016 as a headset designed for the PlayStation 4. Unlike many PC VR systems of the period, it used Sony’s console ecosystem and originally relied on PlayStation Camera tracking and PlayStation Move controllers for room interaction.
The figure refers to headsets sold, not the number of people who used VR or the number of compatible games sold. It is also distinct from PlayStation VR2 sales, because Sony’s second-generation headset launched in 2023 for PlayStation 5.
