How many players compete in a standard Tetris 99 match?

The story behind the answer

A standard Tetris 99 match has 99 players competing simultaneously.

The game turns the familiar falling-block puzzle into a battle royale. Each participant plays on an individual Tetris board, while miniature displays show the other competitors. Clearing lines can send garbage rows to opponents, adding pressure as the match develops.

Players are eliminated when their stack reaches the top of the playfield or a new piece cannot enter. The winner is the last surviving player, so the title’s number directly describes the normal match size rather than a score target or a level.

Tetris 99 was developed by Arika and published by Nintendo for Nintendo Switch. It launched digitally on February 13, 2019, for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Its offline CPU Battle mode can also fill the match with 98 computer-controlled opponents, preserving the 99-player format.
