Tetris DS can support ten players locally.
Released for Nintendo DS in 2006, the game expanded traditional Tetris with several competitive and themed modes. Its multiplayer suite included standard player-versus-player Tetris and a Competition mode featuring special items. That local competition could accommodate as many as ten players, making it one of the most notable features of the handheld version.
The number refers to local play, not online play. Before Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued, Tetris DS supported online matches for up to four players. Local games could also use Download Play, allowing players to participate through a single game card under supported conditions.
Tetris DS is often remembered for combining familiar Nintendo properties with Tetris mechanics. Its modes drew on Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Balloon Fight, and Yoshi's Cookie. The game also introduced or popularized features such as item-based competition and a hold box, while retaining classic line-clearing gameplay.
