How many planets did Voyager 2 visit in total?
Answer
Four
Answer
Four
Voyager 2 visited four planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Launched by NASA in 1977, Voyager 2 followed a carefully designed trajectory that used gravity assists. Each flyby of a giant planet increased or redirected the spacecraft’s speed, allowing it to continue outward without carrying enough fuel for conventional propulsion.
It encountered Jupiter in 1979, Saturn in 1981, Uranus in 1986, and Neptune in 1989. Voyager 2 remains the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune. Its planetary tour produced major discoveries about the planets’ atmospheres, magnetic fields, rings, moons, and weather systems.
A common mix-up is counting moons or planetary systems instead of planets. Voyager 2 flew past many moons, including Io, Europa, Titania, Oberon, and Triton, but the quiz asks for planets. Voyager 1 also visited Jupiter and Saturn, but it was directed toward a closer encounter with Saturn’s moon Titan and did not continue to Uranus or Neptune.
