First Peter says that eight people were saved through the Flood aboard Noah’s Ark.
First Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being brought safely through water. The eight are Noah, his wife, their three sons, and the sons’ three wives. Genesis 7:13 names Noah’s household entering the ark but does not present the number in the same compact phrase.
The three sons are named Shem, Ham, and Japheth in Genesis. Their wives are not named in the biblical account. This means the number refers to the human occupants of Noah’s family, not to the total number of living creatures aboard the vessel.
Later traditions give names to Noah’s wife and to the wives of his sons, but those names come from sources outside Genesis and vary across traditions. The New Testament’s figure of eight is therefore the clearest concise biblical answer to the question of how many people survived inside the ark.
