How many people does a standard Volkswagen Beetle seat?

The story behind the answer

A standard Volkswagen Beetle seats four people.

The classic Beetle is a small four-passenger car, with two seats in front and a rear bench for two more passengers. This arrangement matched the car’s original purpose as an economical family vehicle: it was compact on the outside but practical enough to carry a driver, three passengers, and luggage.

The Beetle’s rear-mounted, air-cooled engine helped preserve useful space at the front of the car. Luggage could be carried under the front hood and in the area behind the rear seat, although the cabin and storage areas were modest by modern standards.

Four seats does not mean four doors. The standard Beetle is a two-door car, so rear passengers enter by folding or tilting the front seats forward. That configuration was common among compact cars of the period and helped keep the body simple and lightweight.

Passenger comfort and exact interior dimensions varied by year and body style. Convertibles and sportier versions could feel tighter, but the standard seating capacity remained four rather than five or six.
