A classic Mini seats four people.
That compact four-seat layout was one of the car’s defining achievements. Designed by Alec Issigonis for the British Motor Corporation, the Mini placed its engine transversely at the front and drove the front wheels. This arrangement avoided a long engine bay and freed valuable cabin space.
The Mini’s small exterior therefore concealed a surprisingly usable passenger compartment. Issigonis also used rubber-cone suspension and tiny 10-inch wheels to reduce mechanical intrusion into the cabin. The result was a genuine four-seater rather than a two-seater with occasional rear seats.
The common mix-up is luggage capacity: the Mini could carry four occupants, but their luggage space was limited. Door bins, a dashboard shelf and a small area behind the rear seats helped compensate. Estate, van and pickup versions changed the body configuration, but the familiar saloon Mini was the four-seat classic.
