A 16-car N700S Shinkansen can carry 1,323 passengers. The standard Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen formation has 200 Green Car seats and 1,123 ordinary-class seats.
The N700S is an evolution of the N700 family and entered commercial service in Japan on 1 July 2020. The “S” stands for “Supreme,” reflecting its redesigned equipment, improved ride comfort and more efficient systems. Unlike some earlier Shinkansen designs, the N700S uses a standardized architecture that can be configured in different train lengths.
The 1,323 figure is the seated capacity of the 16-car configuration, not a universal capacity for every N700S. Six-car sets used on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen carry 391 passengers, while other regional versions can have different layouts. The 16-car train’s three Green Cars occupy cars 8 through 10.
