How many papers did Rosalind Franklin publish in the April 1953 Nature issue?

The story behind the answer

Rosalind Franklin published one paper in the April 1953 issue of Nature.

The paper, co-authored with Raymond Gosling, was titled “Molecular Configuration in Sodium Thymonucleate.” It presented X-ray diffraction evidence concerning DNA and appeared in the landmark 25 April 1953 issue of Nature, alongside papers by James Watson and Francis Crick, and by Maurice Wilkins, Alec Stokes, and Herbert Wilson.

The three papers formed a coordinated sequence with continuous pagination. Watson and Crick proposed the double-helical model first; Wilkins and his colleagues reported diffraction results; and Franklin and Gosling contributed their experimental analysis. Because all three papers appeared together, quizzes sometimes mistakenly count three papers as Franklin's publications. Three is the number of related DNA papers in the issue, not the number authored by Franklin.

Franklin later continued important research at Birkbeck College, including work on tobacco mosaic virus and other plant viruses. Her April paper was one of several contributions that helped establish the experimental foundation for understanding DNA's structure.
