Where is Rosalind Franklin buried?

The story behind the answer

Rosalind Franklin is buried in Willesden Jewish Cemetery in London.

Franklin was interred in the family plot at what is also known as Willesden United Synagogue Cemetery, on Beaconsfield Road in the London Borough of Brent. She died on 16 April 1958 at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea and was buried the following day, in accordance with Jewish burial practice.

Her tomb is in the Franklin family enclosure, close to the cemetery’s prayer hall. Historic England lists the tomb as Grade II, recognizing its architectural and historical significance. The cemetery itself was established in the 1870s and contains the graves and tombs of many prominent British Jewish figures.

Franklin’s burial place is sometimes obscured by the public focus on her DNA research and on the Nobel Prize awarded to Watson, Crick, and Wilkins in 1962. She could not have been awarded that prize because Nobel Prizes are not given posthumously. Her grave nevertheless forms part of the physical record of a scientist whose importance has become increasingly recognized.
