Apollo 8 completed 10 orbits of the Moon.
The mission reached lunar orbit on December 24, 1968, after a journey of about 68 hours from Earth. Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders spent roughly 20 hours circling the Moon, completing ten revolutions before firing the spacecraft’s engine to begin the return trip.
Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission to leave Earth orbit, reach the Moon and enter lunar orbit. It did not carry a Lunar Module and did not attempt a landing. Its command-and-service module flew alone, while the crew tested navigation, communications and the ability to perform the critical lunar-orbit insertion and departure burns.
The ten-orbit figure is sometimes confused with the mission’s ten lunar passes during its historic Christmas Eve broadcast, but those are the same planned revolutions around the Moon, not 10 orbits plus an additional set. The crew photographed the far side for the first time at close range and captured the famous Earthrise image during this orbital mission.
