Japan’s Sumo Association recognized 82 official kimarite in 2001.
Kimarite are the named techniques used to classify how a sumo bout was won. The list includes familiar methods such as oshidashi, yorikiri, and uwatenage, along with uncommon techniques that may appear only rarely in tournaments. The winning technique is announced after the bout and recorded in official results.
The number was expanded in 2001, when the association added 12 techniques to the previously recognized list of 70. The additions included several rare or specialized actions, reflecting the desire to describe winning movements more precisely.
Kimarite are not the same as prohibited actions, or kinjite. A wrestler can lose for a foul even when no ordinary winning technique is awarded. Winning by an opponent’s disqualification is recorded separately from most physical kimarite.
