South Korea’s standard Chuseok holiday period usually includes three official days.
The three-day period consists of the day before Chuseok, Chuseok itself, and the day after it. This arrangement allows families time to travel, prepare food, perform ancestral rites, visit graves, and return home.
The actual break can be longer when Chuseok connects with a weekend or another public holiday. South Korea has also occasionally designated temporary holidays, so a particular year may produce an extended travel period well beyond the standard three days.
The length of the official holiday does not mean every Chuseok observance follows exactly the same schedule. Families may gather before the holiday, and many people begin journeys early because Chuseok is one of the busiest travel periods in South Korea.
