Five of the America250 coin designs authorized under the 2020 law were quarter dollars.
The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 authorized anniversary-related redesigns across six circulating denominations, including five quarter dollars. The quarter program provided several opportunities to represent the history and ideals associated with the United States Semiquincentennial.
The legislation also required that one of the quarters depict the contributions of women. That requirement made the quarter series more specific than a simple numerical anniversary marking and directed attention toward groups and achievements represented in the national story.
The six-denomination total and five-quarter total are easy to confuse. Five refers only to the quarter dollars; six refers to all authorized circulating denominations together. Design proposals were reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee before final decisions by the Treasury secretary.
