The Asr prayer in Islam has four obligatory rak’ahs.
A rak’ah is a unit of Islamic prayer containing a prescribed sequence of standing, recitation, bowing, and prostration. Asr, the late-afternoon salah, is classified as a four-rak’ah obligatory prayer, just like Dhuhr and Isha.
This count refers to the fard portion. Muslims may perform additional voluntary prayers before Asr, but those sunnah or nafl units are not included when stating the obligatory number. The count also does not describe how long the prayer takes, since recitation speed varies.
The daily obligatory pattern is commonly summarized as Fajr with two rak’ahs, Dhuhr with four, Asr with four, Maghrib with three, and Isha with four. This schedule is separate from the Five Pillars as a list: salat is one pillar, while the rak’ah counts describe its daily implementation.
