The original Harry Potter series contains seven novels.
The sequence begins with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and ends with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Across the seven books, readers follow Harry through his years at Hogwarts and his conflict with Lord Voldemort.
The structure reflects the school setting: Harry normally advances one academic year in each volume. The final book expands beyond the usual school-year pattern as Harry, Ron and Hermione search for Horcruxes rather than attending Hogwarts in the normal way.
Readers sometimes count companion books, screenplay publications or stage scripts alongside the core novels. Those works belong to the wider Wizarding World but are not part of Rowling’s original seven-novel Harry Potter sequence. The film adaptation has eight movies because the final novel was divided into two films.
