How many novels are in C.S. Lewis’s original The Chronicles of Narnia series?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s original The Chronicles of Narnia series contains seven novels. The books were published between 1950 and 1956 and are set mainly in the magical land of Narnia, where talking animals, enchanted objects, and human visitors intersect.

The publication order begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, followed by Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew, and The Last Battle. The Magician’s Nephew is a prequel in story chronology, but it was published sixth.

The series is sometimes numbered differently because later editions have used chronological reading order rather than publication order. That change does not alter the total: Lewis wrote seven Narnia books. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe remains the best-known entry and introduces the Pevensie children’s first journey through the wardrobe into Narnia.
