Facebook introduced five new reaction buttons in 2016, expanding the original Like button with Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry.
The reactions were released globally on February 24, 2016, after more than a year of testing. Facebook designed them to let users respond to posts with more emotional nuance than a simple thumbs-up. Users could press and hold the Like button to reveal the alternatives.
The five additions were Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry. Together with Like, they formed the familiar six-reaction set. Facebook had tested another option, Yay, in Ireland and Spain, but it was removed before the worldwide rollout.
The feature is sometimes described as six reactions because Like is counted in the complete set. This question asks how many new buttons were added beyond Like, so five is the canonical answer. Facebook later added temporary or event-specific options, including Care in 2020.
