How many months is the typical gestation period of a musk ox?

The story behind the answer

The typical gestation period of a musk ox is about eight months.

Musk oxen usually mate in late summer, and calves are born the following spring. This timing places births near the seasonal return of vegetation, when mothers can find more food and newborns face improving weather conditions. A single calf is typical, although reproductive outcomes vary with age, nutrition and environmental conditions.

The species’ reproductive schedule is part of a broader Arctic survival strategy. Adults form groups and use their dense underfur, long guard hairs and cooperative defence to withstand winter. Calves are particularly vulnerable to cold and predators, so spring births provide a better chance of survival than midwinter births.

Gestation is sometimes confused with the much longer pregnancy periods of large marine mammals. Musk oxen are terrestrial bovids, related to sheep and goats, not cattle in the narrow taxonomic sense. Their heavy appearance reflects insulation and body shape rather than an exceptionally long pregnancy.
