The Mini Cooper officially achieved three Monte Carlo Rally wins.
Those victories came in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Paddy Hopkirk won in 1964, Timo Mäkinen took the 1965 event, and Rauno Aaltonen won in 1967. All three victories were scored by the competition-focused Mini Cooper S.
The Mini’s success was remarkable because it was much smaller and less powerful than many rivals. Its front-wheel drive, compact dimensions and nimble handling helped it perform especially well on twisting mountain roads and changing surfaces. BMC’s Competition Department prepared the cars for international rallying under Stuart Turner.
A common mix-up involves 1966. Minis finished first, second and third, but all three were disqualified over a headlamp-rule technicality, so that result is not counted as an official victory. The 1967 triumph therefore became the Mini’s third officially recognized Monte Carlo win, not its fourth.
