One IMAX camera could hold roughly three minutes of film during The Odyssey's production.

That limitation came from the physical capacity of the film magazine. Because the movie was shot on IMAX film rather than digitally, longer scenes sometimes had to pause while the camera was reloaded. The performers then resumed the scene after the new roll was prepared.

This is one of the practical differences between large-format film and digital cinematography. The Odyssey used more than 2 million feet of IMAX 70mm film, so reloads were an unavoidable part of the process. The production also developed lighter and quieter IMAX cameras and used sound blimps to reduce camera noise during dialogue scenes.
