What distinction did Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026) achieve with its cinematography?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026) became the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.

Nolan had used IMAX photography extensively in earlier films, including The Dark Knight and Oppenheimer, but The Odyssey represented a larger technical commitment. Rather than combining IMAX sequences with other formats, the production photographed the entire feature using IMAX film cameras.

IMAX film photography is known for its large image area and high level of detail, but the cameras are traditionally heavy and noisy. For dialogue scenes on The Odyssey, the production developed a smaller, quieter IMAX camera known by the codename Keighley.

This distinction is different from simply being filmed in 70mm. IMAX 70mm is a specialized large-format process with a distinct frame size and presentation system, while ordinary 70mm productions may use different cameras and workflows. The film’s all-IMAX approach was therefore a specific production milestone.
