McDonald’s had 40,275 restaurants worldwide at the end of 2022.
That figure comes from McDonald’s systemwide restaurant count, which includes company-operated restaurants as well as franchised and licensed locations. The total covered three reporting groups: 13,444 restaurants in the United States, 10,103 in International Operated Markets, and 16,728 in International Developmental Licensed Markets and Corporate.
The 2022 total was slightly higher than the 40,031 restaurants reported at the end of 2021. McDonald’s opened 1,576 restaurants during 2022 but closed 1,332, with many closures connected to the company’s sale of its Russian business and temporary closures in Ukraine.
Another important detail is ownership. Approximately 95 percent of McDonald’s restaurants were franchised at the end of 2022, so the worldwide total is not the same as the number of restaurants directly operated by McDonald’s Corporation. The count is also a year-end snapshot, not a permanent total; later reports recorded further changes.
