How many mainline Tomb Raider games did Core Design develop?

The story behind the answer

Core Design developed six mainline Tomb Raider games.

The Derby-based British studio created the original Tomb Raider, released in 1996, and followed it with Tomb Raider II in 1997 and Tomb Raider III in 1998. It then produced Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation in 1999, Tomb Raider: Chronicles in 2000 and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness in 2003.

These six titles form Core Design’s principal run on the franchise. After the troubled reception and production difficulties surrounding The Angel of Darkness, development responsibilities moved to Crystal Dynamics, which began a new phase of the series with Tomb Raider: Legend in 2006.

The number can be confused because the franchise also includes handheld games, ports, expansions and spin-offs. The figure here counts the six major Core Design-developed entries associated with the original series, rather than every Tomb Raider release made during that period.
