How many ignudi surround the central Genesis panels?

The story behind the answer

Twenty ignudi surround the central Genesis panels on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. They are arranged at the corners of five smaller scenes in the central sequence, with four nude male figures assigned to each scene.

The ignudi are not evenly identical repetitions. Michelangelo gave each figure a distinct pose, gesture, and arrangement of drapery or accessories, including ribbons, cushions, and oak garlands. Their varied bodies and difficult positions demonstrate his interest in anatomy and his ability to create convincing movement within the ceiling’s architectural framework.

The total is sometimes confusing because one ignudo was badly damaged in a 1797 gunpowder explosion at Castel Sant’Angelo; historical accounts and surviving evidence still preserve the intended count of 20. The figures’ precise symbolic role is debated. They may be decorative youths, idealized human forms, or angelic beings, but their number and placement are established features of Michelangelo’s scheme.

They should not be confused with the prophets, sibyls, or ancestors painted elsewhere on the vault.
