How many human occupants does Genesis name aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis names eight human occupants aboard Noah’s Ark.

The group consists of Noah, his wife, Noah’s three sons, and the three wives of those sons. Genesis 7:13 presents these people entering the Ark before the flood, while 1 Peter 3:20 also refers to “eight persons” being saved through water.

The biblical account does not give the women’s names. Noah’s sons are named Shem, Ham, and Japheth, but the text identifies their wives only as Noah’s daughters-in-law. This is why answers that list named family members can still be incomplete: the total is eight, not four.

The number refers to human survivors in the narrative, not to the animals carried aboard. Genesis separately discusses animals, birds, and creatures that enter the Ark, so the human total should not be confused with the total number of living beings in the story.
