Scylla is a sea monster from Greek mythology who attacks sailors near a dangerous passage. In the film, the creature was predominantly created as a digital effect, distinguishing it from the more practical treatment used for the Cyclops and the Laestrygonians.
Christopher Nolan said the depiction was inspired by the work of Guillermo del Toro. The filmmakers approached Scylla as a character rather than treating the monster as a purely mechanical obstacle.
The attack also involved practical reference and performer work. A ratchet system lifted stunt performers into the air, while jet skis rode in circles to provide reference material for the whirlpool that was later replaced with digital effects.
