Santana’s album Supernatural won nine Grammy Awards at the 2000 ceremony.
The album powered a major late-career revival for guitarist Carlos Santana and his band. Its best-known single, “Smooth,” featured Rob Thomas and won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Supernatural itself won Album of the Year.
At the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, Santana collected nine awards, matching the record for the most Grammys won by an act in one night at that time. The sweep followed a long gap since Santana’s earlier commercial peak and introduced the group to a new generation of listeners through collaborations.
The number is sometimes confused with the eight-award single-night record set by Michael Jackson in 1984. Both totals are historically notable, but Supernatural’s 2000 haul was nine awards.
