How many French Open men's singles titles did Bjorn Borg win?

The story behind the answer

Björn Borg won six French Open men's singles titles. He lifted the Coupe des Mousquetaires in 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Borg's dominance was especially remarkable because the French Open is played on slow clay, a surface that rewards patience, stamina and heavy topspin. He won four consecutive titles from 1978 through 1981 and completed the French Open–Wimbledon double three times in succession, from 1978 to 1980.

His first Paris title came in 1974, when he defeated Manuel Orantes in a five-set final after falling two sets behind. His last came in 1981 against Ivan Lendl. Borg was undefeated in six French Open finals and finished with a 49–2 tournament match record. The two losses were both to Italy's Adriano Panatta, in 1973 and 1976.

A common mix-up is confusing Borg's six French Open championships with his five Wimbledon titles. Together, those victories gave him 11 major singles titles, although he never won the US Open or Australian Open.
