How many Ferrari 288 GTOs were produced?

Ferrari produced 272 examples of the 288 GTO. The limited-run road car was built from 1984 to 1987 as Ferrari's high-performance homologation model, with production far exceeding the 200 cars initially planned.

The 288 GTO was officially called the Ferrari GTO; “288” is a commonly used nickname referring to its approximately 2.8-litre engine and eight cylinders. It used a twin-turbocharged V8, rear-mid-engine layout and extensive lightweight construction, while its dramatic styling came from Pininfarina.

Although the 288 GTO is often described as a Group B homologation special, Ferrari's competition programme was never completed because Group B circuit racing was cancelled. The 272 road cars were therefore valuable both as rare supercars and as the technical bridge between the 308 GTB and the F40.

A common mix-up concerns the 288 GTO Evoluzione. Ferrari built six Evoluzione cars—five production examples and one prototype—which are normally discussed separately from the 272 standard 288 GTOs. Niki Lauda received the last regular production car from Enzo Ferrari.
