A common source of confusion is the number 39. Ferrari also built three related four-litre 330 GTO specials using 250 GTO-based chassis. Some lists add those cars to the 36 standard three-litre examples, but the accepted production figure for the Ferrari 250 GTO itself is 36.
The car’s rarity was reinforced by its hand-built aluminium construction, racing success and selective sales process. Its name combines the 250 designation, referring to the engine’s approximate per-cylinder displacement, with GTO, meaning Gran Turismo Omologato.
