How many episodes were in The X-Files season 10 revival?

The story behind the answer

The X-Files season 10 revival contained 6 episodes.

Season 10 was a short-form revival that premiered on Fox on January 24, 2016, fourteen years after the ninth season ended. It concluded on February 22, 2016, with six episodes in total. The compact order was shaped partly by the busy schedules of stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson and was promoted initially as an “event series” rather than a conventional full season.

The season brought back FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, along with Walter Skinner and other familiar figures. Its episodes alternated between mythology installments and mostly standalone investigations, including the widely praised comedy-horror story “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster.” The season’s mythology episodes revisited extraterrestrial conspiracies and the possibility of a government-linked alien threat.

The six-episode count is easy to confuse with the much longer original seasons, many of which had roughly 20 or more episodes. The revival’s limited format was also distinct from season 11, which followed in 2018 and contained ten episodes. Fox later described the 2016 run as season 10, despite its initial event-series branding.
