Fifty-nine editions of the US Open had been played in the Open Era by the end of 2026.
The Open Era began in 1968, when professional and amateur players were allowed to compete together in major tournaments. The 2026 event was the 59th US Open held during that period, even though the tournament itself dates back to the nineteenth century.
This is why the Open Era edition count is lower than the tournament’s overall historical edition number. The 2026 US Open was the 146th edition in total, but only 59 of those editions belonged to the professional era that began in 1968.
The event was played on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. It remained the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the 2026 tennis calendar.
