How many dwarfs did Snow White live with?

The story behind the answer

Snow White lived with seven dwarfs. After fleeing her murderous stepmother, she found their cottage in the forest, where the dwarfs agreed to shelter her in exchange for help with household work.

The story comes from the Brothers Grimm’s German fairy tale “Snow White,” first published in 1812 as Tale 53 in Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The dwarfs are not individually named in the Grimm versions; names such as Doc, Grumpy, and Dopey came later, especially through Walt Disney’s 1937 animated film.

The number seven is central to the tale’s identity and is repeated in its traditional title, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Readers sometimes remember the Disney characters more vividly than the original story, but both versions retain the same number. The dwarfs also play a key role in protecting Snow White from the Evil Queen, although the Queen eventually deceives her with a poisoned apple.
