How many denominations were included in the United States Bicentennial circulating commemorative coin set?

The story behind the answer

Three denominations were included in the United States Bicentennial circulating commemorative coin set.

The set consisted of a quarter, a half dollar, and a dollar struck by the United States Mint in 1975 and 1976. Each coin used a special reverse design while retaining the regular portrait on its obverse: George Washington appeared on the quarter, John F. Kennedy on the half dollar, and Dwight D. Eisenhower on the dollar.

All three denominations displayed the dual date 1776–1976, making the coins instantly recognizable as Bicentennial issues. Despite production beginning in 1975, none of these three coins carried a 1975 date; the dual date was used instead.

The program was unusual because these commemorative coins circulated as ordinary legal tender rather than being limited to collector medals. America250’s 2026 coin program echoes that earlier anniversary tradition while using new designs and a broader range of denominations.
