How many quarter designs are planned in the 2026 United States Semiquincentennial coinage program?

The story behind the answer

The 2026 United States Semiquincentennial coinage program includes five new quarter designs. The quarters are part of a wider commemorative coin program marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The planned quarter subjects include the Mayflower Compact, the American Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States and the Gettysburg Address. Together, the designs connect events from early colonial history, the founding period and later struggles over the meaning of American democracy.

The coin program also includes commemorative designs for other denominations. A dime and half dollar were planned, while cents and nickels carry the dual date 1776–2026. The legislation authorizing the designs also allowed a semiquincentennial dollar and special collector issues.

The five-quarter count refers specifically to the new quarter designs, not to every coin issued in 2026. The designs were authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, signed into law in 2021.
