How many days was Woodstock 1969 originally scheduled to last?

The story behind the answer

Woodstock 1969 was originally scheduled to last three days.

The festival was advertised for August 15, 16, and 17, 1969. Because of delays, huge crowds, and difficult conditions, performances continued into the morning of Monday, August 18. This is why Woodstock is often described as a three-day event that lasted four calendar days.

The festival began on Friday afternoon with Richie Havens after traffic delays affected the program. Rain, technical problems, and the large number of performers pushed the timetable steadily behind schedule. Jimi Hendrix eventually played the closing set on Monday morning.

The phrase “three days of peace and music” came from the festival’s promotional language and became one of its most famous descriptions. It refers to the planned duration, not the full span from the first performance to the final one.
