How many conspirators were executed for the Gunpowder Plot?

The story behind the answer

Eight conspirators were executed for the Gunpowder Plot. They were convicted of high treason after the failed attempt to destroy the House of Lords and kill King James I during the State Opening of Parliament.

The eight were Guy Fawkes, Thomas Wintour, Robert Keyes, Ambrose Rookwood, Robert Wintour, Thomas Bates, John Grant and Sir Everard Digby. Four were executed on 30 January 1606, and the remaining four, including Fawkes, were executed the following day. Their sentence was hanging, drawing and quartering, although Fawkes broke his neck during the hanging and avoided the rest of the punishment.

The number can be confusing because the plot involved more than eight men. Robert Catesby and Thomas Percy were killed while resisting arrest, so they were not executed at the scaffold. Other people, including the Jesuit Henry Garnet, were later executed in connection with alleged knowledge of the conspiracy, but they were not among the eight principal plotters executed after the main trial.
