How many companions formed the Fellowship of the Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s story?

The story behind the answer

The Fellowship of the Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s story consisted of nine companions.

The group was formed at Rivendell to escort Frodo Baggins and help him take the One Ring toward Mordor. Its members were Frodo, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf.

The number nine was deliberately linked to the nine Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths who served Sauron. The Fellowship therefore represented a counterforce made up of different peoples and traditions: Hobbits, Men, an Elf, a Dwarf, and a wizard. Their differences create both tension and strength during the journey.

The Fellowship does not remain together for the entire narrative. It breaks apart after the crisis at Amon Hen, where Boromir dies and Frodo and Sam continue toward Mordor. The other members pursue different paths, but the group’s original mission shapes the rest of the story.
