Five commercial singles promoted Metallica's self-titled album, known as The Black Album.
The five singles were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” Together, they gave the album an unusually broad presence on rock radio and music television.
The sequence began with “Enter Sandman” in July 1991, shortly before the album itself. “The Unforgiven” followed later in 1991, while “Nothing Else Matters” and “Wherever I May Roam” extended the campaign into 1992. “Sad but True” was issued afterward.
“Don't Tread on Me” is a common source of confusion. It was sent to rock radio as a promotional release, but it was not one of the five commercial singles. Counting it as a full commercial single produces six, which is not the album's official promotional-single total.
