Six colors appear in the national flag of South Sudan.
They are black, white, red, green, blue, and yellow. Black, red, and green form the main horizontal bands, separated by narrow white lines. A blue triangle occupies the hoist, and a yellow star appears inside that triangle.
The colors carry official symbolic meanings. Black represents the people of South Sudan; red represents blood shed for independence; green refers to land, agriculture, natural wealth, and progress; white represents peace; blue represents the Nile waters; and yellow represents unity, hope, and determination.
The flag was adopted in 2005 after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, before South Sudan became independent in 2011. A frequent source of confusion is counting only the major stripes or overlooking the white separators and the colors inside the hoist triangle. Counting every color gives six.
