Coins are scattered throughout Super Mario World’s courses, bonus rooms, and secret areas. They can also be earned through certain enemy encounters and level mechanics, so reaching the 100-coin threshold is often part of normal exploration rather than a separate mission. The counter continues across a level and resets after the extra life is awarded, allowing the process to repeat.
This rule is distinct from several other ways Super Mario World grants lives. A 1-Up Mushroom gives an extra life immediately, while collecting five Dragon Coins in a single level also awards a 1-Up. The game additionally contains special 3-Up Moons, which grant three lives at once. Players sometimes associate 100 coins with Super Mario 64’s 100-coin Power Star, but in Super Mario World the standard reward is an extra life.
