How many chapters does 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' contain?

The story behind the answer

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland contains 12 chapters. The novel begins with “Down the Rabbit-Hole” and ends with “Alice’s Evidence,” the courtroom chapter in which Alice challenges the proceedings before waking from her strange adventure.

Lewis Carroll’s book was first published in 1865, with illustrations by John Tenniel. Its chapter structure carries Alice through a sequence of loosely connected episodes: the Pool of Tears, the Caucus-Race, the Mad Tea-Party, the Queen’s croquet ground, the Mock Turtle’s story and the trial over the stolen tarts.

The number can be confused with the structure of Through the Looking-Glass, Carroll’s 1871 sequel, which has a different set of chapters and a chess-game framework. Editions may vary in typography, illustrations or introductory material, but the standard novel itself has 12 numbered chapters. The final chapter’s title is sometimes printed as “Alice’s Evidence” or “Alice on the Stand,” depending on the edition.
