The American Freedom Train that toured the United States during the 1975–76 Bicentennial consisted of 26 cars.
The traveling exhibit operated from April 1, 1975, through December 31, 1976. Its cars carried historical objects and displays celebrating American history, allowing communities across the country to experience a national Bicentennial exhibition without traveling to one central venue.
Three steam locomotives powered the train in different regions: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. Diesel locomotives were also used on some sections because of track conditions, derailment damage, or the train’s weight.
The train traveled across all 48 contiguous states and covered more than 25,000 miles. It is sometimes confused with the earlier Freedom Train of 1947–49, which was a separate national exhibit and did not commemorate the Bicentennial.
