How many cars formed the American Freedom Train associated with the 1976 Bicentennial, the predecessor to America250?

The story behind the answer

The American Freedom Train associated with the 1976 Bicentennial consisted of 26 cars.

The train toured the United States during 1975 and 1976 as a traveling exhibition of American history and culture. Its cars carried hundreds of objects, including George Washington’s copy of the Constitution, the original Louisiana Purchase, Judy Garland’s dress from The Wizard of Oz, and a rock from the Moon.

The train was more than a locomotive and a few passenger coaches. It included display cars and showcase cars specially adapted so visitors could view artifacts through large windows. Three restored steam locomotives powered it in different regions, although diesel engines were sometimes used because of track conditions and operational needs.

The American Freedom Train traveled through all 48 contiguous states. It covered 25,833 miles, stopped in 138 cities, and attracted more than 7 million visitors, making it one of the most memorable public projects of the Bicentennial era.
