How many books are in C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia series?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia consists of seven books.

The series begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and ends with The Last Battle. Across the books, children from the ordinary world enter Narnia, a realm populated by talking animals, mythical beings, kings, queens, and supernatural powers.

Lewis published the novels between 1950 and 1956. The release order starts with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, while many modern editions number The Magician's Nephew first because its story takes place earlier in Narnian history. Both numbering systems refer to the same seven-book series.

The books are sometimes described as a single fantasy saga, but their protagonists and settings vary. Some characters recur, while others appear only in individual adventures. The seven-volume structure is therefore a stable bibliographic fact rather than a count of one continuous narrator's story.
